Ashe County Sheriff B. Phil Howell on March 15 announced the arrest of Wesley Pennington, 27, of Lansing and Marcie Jo Lipford, 44, of Creston after a month-long search that left two patrol cars damaged.
Over the prior several weeks, Ashe deputies attempted to apprehend Pennington on outstanding N.C. Department of Correction absconder warrants.
On March 9, an Ashe deputy on patrol in Lansing spotted and pursued Pennington. Howell said that during the chase, Pennington backed his vehicle into the deputy’s patrol car several times, causing extensive damage. Pennington fled into the woods on foot, where sheriff’s office deputies, N.C. Probation officers and U.S. marshals searched on the ground and the N.C. Highway Patrol attempted to locate him from above ground.
During a second incident on March 14, deputies attempted to apprehend Pennington when he fled once again, striking another deputy’s patrol vehicle head-on. The deputy whose car was hit was able to apprehend and place Pennington under arrest, Howell said.
