Nearly three weeks have passed since District 2 tournaments concluded, but now three Wilkes County all-star softball teams returned to the diamond on Thursday afternoon.
The Tar Heel League state tournaments are currently underway in Currituck and are scheduled to conclude with the championship games on Sunday morning.
Wilkes County has fared well in recent years at the state tournaments as the 12-and-under all-stars won the state championship last year. Both the 8-and-under and 10-and-under groups won state titles two years ago.
The 8-and-under all-stars began its run in the eight-team field on Thursday afternoon with a 13-4 win the host, Currituck.
Wilkes County fell into the losers bracket on Friday following a 12-6 loss to Wendell. Wilkes will play an elimination game today at 3:45 p.m. against the winner of the Burke County/Watauga game, which is being played at 1 p.m.
It will face the winner of Wendell (District 4) and Johnston County West (District 5) Friday at 9 a.m.
Wilkes County’s 10-and-under all-stars were scheduled to began play Thursday against the at-large representative from District 3, but instead has now received a first-round bye.
Wilkes County began tournament play Friday morning with a 12-2 win against Currituck and advance to the winners bracket finals. It will now play Edenton on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Wilkes County began defense of its state championship in the 12-and-under division with an 8-1 win over Cashie (District 7) on Thursday afternoon.
That win was followed up Friday morning with a 17-4 victory over fellow District 2 representative Ashe County.
Wilkes County advances to the winners bracket on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Shelby. Winner advances to Sunday's championship game.
Notes: There is also a 15-and-under state tournament, but Wilkes County does not field a team for that age group. Visit www.tarheelleagues.com throughout the weekend for updated brackets and also check WJP Sports on Facebook for updates.
