The West Wilkes varsity volleyball team will host Maiden in the opening round of the 2A state playoffs on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Millers Creek.

The Blackhawks, seeded third in the 2A West, are 14-0 and have won three straight Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference championships. West has been coached by Steve Bryan for 10 years.

The 14th seed in the West, the Blue Devils finished second in the South Fork 2A Conference with an 11-3 record. The team is coached by Marsha Davis, who has helmed the program since 2012. Maiden was the 2A state runner-up in 2016.

West Wilkes is one of five unbeaten teams among the 16 squads in in the 2A West brackets. There are five more undefeated schools in the 2A East brackets.

In the teams’ only other meeting, Maiden swept the visiting Blackhawks in the first round of the 2017 2A state tournament, 25-15, 25-13 and 25-11.

Maiden enters the match with a 24-23 all-time record in the state playoffs. West is 13-13.
