The West Wilkes soccer team edged intercounty foe North Wilkes, 2-1, in Millers Creek on Monday.
The winning goal was made by Leo Resendiz off an assist by Kevin Gonzalez. Gonzalez scored West’s first goal, after being fed by Omar Limon, who assisted on the play.
“It was a well-played game by both teams,” said West Coach Adan Gonzalez, who added that goalkeeper Angel Limon notched his fourth win of the season. “Angel is playing very well this season.”
North’s goal occurred when Nolan Stanley sent a header off the left post and Ivan Duran put it back in.
“We played really well and just came up a little short,” noted North’s coach, Logan Johnson.
The Blackhawks powered up to 4-5 and 1-2 in the Foothills 2A Conference. The Vikings backslid to 2-4, 0-2.
Eagles deny Cards
Wilkes Central posted a 2-0 shutout of East Surry in Moravian Falls on Monday.
It was the first Foothills 2A win of the season for the Eagles, who improved to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Cardinals slipped to 4-4, 2-1.
Central’s goal in the first half was scored by Alejandro Oquell, who was assisted on the breakaway by Johnie Randy. In the second half Randy found the back of the net, assisted by Roman O’Sullivan.
“We acknowledged we would be in for a fight, and these kids didn’t quit,” said Central Coach Matt Matthews. “Our first 17 minutes were a little scrappy, trying to just maintain a defensive stand.”
Matthews said that after he and assistant coach Brooke Bentley made some adjustments, “the guys took the fight to them, no brakes, and suddenly (East Surry) found themselves on their heels. This is the kind of athletes we have the privilege of t raining.”
He added, “We opened with some new faces again, as we had some out with illnesses or still recovering from illnesses, but this is a united squad of scrappers. We are excited about the coming days and weeks as we continue to develop, train and heal, and that is an exciting future we are headed into.”
Sauras blank Cards
South Stokes shut out East Wilkes in Ronda on Monday, 7-0.
The Sauras got two goals apiece from Tyler Whitaker, Ethan Moran and Trey Seagle. Moran also had two assists. Connor O’Leary posted the shutout in goal.
South Stokes improved to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the Northwest 1A Conference. It was the league opener for the Cardinals, who are winless in five games this season.
North routs Alleghany
North Wilkes poured in five goals in the first half and coasted to an 8-1 victory over Alleghany in Sparta on Thursday.
Nolan Stanley had a hat trick for the Vikings and assisted on another goal. Matthew Pardo had two goals and three assists.
Elgar Bonilla also booted home a pair of goals.
“We had a strong outing against an Alleghany team that was shorthanded but fought hard,” said Logan Johnson, North’s coach. “We had some guys step up on defense in place of an injured Braeden Foster. It was a whole team effort as it always is. I am very proud of my men.”
Ivan Duran paced North with four assists. Joel Lopez added a single goal.
The Vikings powered up to 2-3 overall with the nonconference victory. The Trojans are winless in two matches this season.
Forbush wipes West
Forbush found the net nine times in a shutout of West Wilkes in East Bend on Sept. 15.
Following the 9-0 win, the Falcons improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the Foothills 2A Conference. The Blackhawks slipped to 3-5, 0-2.
Surry blanks Central
Surry Central needed only a single goal to edge Wilkes Central in Dobson on Sept. 15.
After posting the 1-0 shutout, the Golden Eagles upped their record to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Foothills 2A Conference.
Surry Central is tied with East Surry at the top of the league standings.
The Eagles dipped to 1-5, 0-2 after the setback.
