West Wilkes built an early lead and then held off Smoky Mountain, 4-3, in the second round of the 2A state softball playoffs Wednesday in Millers Creek.
The Blackhawks improved to 16-0 and on Friday at 6 p.m. will host 16-0 West Stanly in the 2A West Region semifinals. The Colts knocked off Hibriten in Lenoir on Wednesday, 9-1.
West freshman Lily Proffit cracked a solo home run and earned the complete-game win on the mound. She allowed five hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out nine. Her pitching record bettered to 12-0.
Senior Paige Phillips and junior Presley Dancy each had two of the Blackhawks’ eight hits. Dancy and Carly Parsons had RBI singles in the contest, and Kendall Stanley drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.
In the sixth, Smoky Mountain’s KayLeigh Jean Ammons connected on a two-run homer to cut the West lead in half. Alannah Hopkins added an RBI single in the seventh before Proffit closed the door on the Mustangs.
West Wilkes and West Stanly last met in the third round of the 2019 playoffs. The Colts won that contest in Oakboro, 6-1, en route to winning the 2A state championship. Six members of the current Blackhawks team played in that game.
