East Wilkes seniors Dylan Black and Dylan Ward captured the 1A doubles title Monday in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference championships at Elkin High School.

Black and Ward defeated Elkin’s Jack Zamudio and Thomas McComb in the 1A finals 6-1, 6-0. They dropped Elkin’s Anthony Parrett and Caeson Baker in the semifinals 6-0, 6-0. The Cardinal duo opened with a 6-0, 6-0 domination of Starmount’s Diego Zuniga and Ball.

East’s Braxton Long and Nathaniel Burchette finished third in doubles, defeating Parrett/Baker in the consolation finals 6-2, 7-6.

In addition to Black, Ward, Long and Burchette, East’s Cole Macemore qualified for the 1A Western Regional tournament on May 7.

Cole Macemore finished third and Luke Macemore took fourth in the singles tourney Monday, which was won by Elkin’s Patrick Soos. Cole defeated Luke in the consolation finals 6-2, 7-5.

Black, Ward, Long, Burchette and both Macemores also earned all-conference honors.

“Each of these young men played outstanding in the tournament and represented East Wilkes well,” said Cardinal Coach Aaron Simmons.

In 2A action Monday, the Wilkes Central doubles team of Jack Shepherd and Tate Johnson finished second, being edged by Ashe’s Tatum Brown and John Perkins in the finals 7-5, 6-4.

In 2A singles, Aiden Jennings of North Wilkes took third after dropping Wilkes Central’s Nick Hall in the consolation finals 7-5, 6-4. Ashe’s Jake Reavis won the singles title.

The team of Johnson/Shepherd and Jennings all qualified for the 2A West Regionals.

East blanks West

East Wilkes swept West Wilkes in straight sets, 9-0, in Millers Creek on Thursday.

In singles, top-seeded Dylan Ward defeated Ryan Milam 6-0, 6-0; #2 Dylan Black d. Logan Goss 6-0, 6-0; #3 Braxton Long d. Isaiah Lewczyk 6-0, 6-0; #4 Nathaniel Burchette d. Sam Lewczyk 6-0, 6-2; #5 Cole Macemore d. Ben Flora 6-1, 6-0; and #6 Luke Macemore d. Matthew Blankenship 6-0, 6-2.

Doubles action saw #1 Ward/Black d. Milam/Flora 8-0; #2 Long/Burchette d. Lewczyk/Lewczyk 8-0; and #3 Macemore/Macemore d. Goss/Blankenship 8-1.

The Cardinals moved to 11-2 in the MVAC while the Blackhawks faltered to 2-10.

Eagles rout Vikings

Wilkes Central didn’t drop a set in a 9-0 blanking of North Wilkes in Moravian Falls on Thursday.

At #1 singles, Tate Johnson defeated Aiden Jennings 6-0, 6-0; #2 Jack Shepherd d. Mitch Adams 6-1, 6-3; #3 Nick Hall d. Caleb Parsons 6-0, 6-0; #4 Jonas Scott d. Lucas Berrier 6-0, 6-0; and the Eagles received forfeit wins at #5 and #6 singles.

In doubles, Johnson/Shepherd won the #1 matchup 8-1 and Hall/Scott defeated Parsons/Berrier 8-1.

The Eagles improved to 7-6 while the Vikings remained winless in 13 matches.

Elkin sweeps Central

League champ Elkin took all nine matchups at Wilkes Central on April 20.

The Eagles were most competitive at #2 doubles. Central’s Nick Hall and Gage York narrowly lost to Anthony Parrett and Caeson Baker, 8-6.

At #5 singles, Central’s Quinn Pyke won five games but eventually surrendered to Parrett, 6-3, 6-2.

The Buckin’ Elks powered up to 13-0 while the Eagles’ mark evened at 6-6.

Ashe shuts out West

Ashe County posted a 9-0 straight-set win over West Wilkes in Millers Creek on April 20.

Senior Matthew Blankenship won three games in the second set of his #6 singles match against Ashe’s Jackson Keith.

The Huskies bettered to 8-4 while the Blackhawks regressed to 2-9.

East blanks North

East Wilkes swept North Wilkes, 9-0, in Ronda on April 20.

In singles play, top-seeded Dylan Ward defeated Aiden Jennings 6-0, 6-0; #2 Dylan Black d. Mitch Adams 6-1, 6-0; #3 Braxton Long d. Caleb Parsons 6-0, 6-0; #4 Nathaniel Burchette d. Lucas Berrier 6-0, 6-0; and East won by default at #5 and #6.

Doubles action saw #1 Ward/Black drop Jennings/Adams 8-0; #2 Cole Macemore/Luke Macemore d. Parsons/Berrier 8-0; and East won by default at #3.

The Cardinals upped their mark to 10-2 while the Vikings dropped to 0-12.
