Victory jump

North Wilkes' bench jumps for joy after its four-set victory over East Wilkes in Thursday evening's MVAC opener.

North Wilkes survived a scare from East Wilkes Thursday evening in Hays, as the Vikings eked out a 3-1 victory in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

With the win the Vikings improved to 5-1 and 1-0 in league play, while the Cardinals dropped to 1-6 and 0-1.
North Wilkes claimed the first set 25-18, but the Cardinals were re-energized in set number two, taking a 25-18 win and tying the match up at one game apiece. A late service run from East's Monica Shaver was part of the difference for the visitors.
That set up a thrilling third set. East Wilkes had the early advantage, but North Wilkes battled back to grab the lead at 22-21 off a kill from the middle from McKenzie Johnson.
The two squads traded points until a powerful shot from North's Stacie Shumate - set up beautifully by Savannah Royall - ended the game at 28-26.
The fourth set was competitive, but the Vikings slowly inched away to finally end the match with a 25-19 win. Royall again was big, serving the last point with an ace that just fell inside the back line.
