North Wilkes continued its late-season surge by dispatching county rival West Wilkes 49-16 Friday night in Millers Creek.
The Blackhawks ended the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference slate at 0-7, and finished 1-10 overall with the loss on the school’s senior night. But with an early touchdown run from Dallas Rash the Hawks held the initial lead after capitalizing on their first offensive drive of the night.
North Wilkes quickly responded, with a 41-yard pass from Cole Chipman to Adam Winebarger that ended in six.
The two teams next traded touchdowns, and the Hawks held a 16-14 advantage early in the second quarter. But two quick North touchdowns - Dylan Church with both a 29-yard scamper and a one-yard run, the latter with only 21 seconds left on the first half clock - gave the visitors a 28-16 cushion at the intermission.
The Vikings cruised through the second half, scoring three more times - and keeping the Blackhawks off the second-half scoreboard - to end the regular season with a league mark of 4-3 and an overall record of 7-4. North Wilkes has now won three in a row.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A playoffs await the Vikings next week, though their first-round opponent is still yet to be determined. In the preliminary brackets, North Wilkes was listed as the No. 13 seed and could travel to No. 4 West Stokes.
