Starmount senior J. Max Swaim doubled his season total in one game with five touchdowns, and the Rams snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cardinals with a win on their Homecoming, Friday night in Boonville.
Swaim ran for a touchdown, caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Trey Dezern and caused and recovered a fumble on defense, returning it for a score.
Eric Wiles’ interception of a Caeden Howell pass set up Dezern’s 20-yard pass to Swaim for a 7-0 lead.
Howell threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Vernon to tie the game. But Swaim would put it out of reach almost single-handedly.
Swaim’s 6-yard run gave the Rams a 14-7 lead.
A possession later, with the Cardinals driving inside the Starmount 25, Swaim tipped an option pitchout, caught the bounce and sprinted untouched 72 yards for a 21-7 lead.
Swaim capped a four-touchdown first half with his second 20-yard touchdown catch with 36 seconds to play in the half, good for a 28-7 lead.
Vernon’s 8-yard touchdown run got the Cardinals within 28-14 to start the second half, but Swaim’s 30-yard touchdown reception and scoring runs from Dezern and Thomas Cole set the final margin.
Brayson Church also scored a touchdown for East Wilkes.
