The postseason awards for the 2019 season just keep coming in for Wilkes County high school girls soccer players.
Eight county players were recently selected to the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association All-Region teams.
On the strength of an 11-11 season and hosting a North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A state playoff match, East Wilkes landed a pair of players on the All-Region 1A team for region nine in seniors Sheila Aguilar and Ciara Pierce.
It’s the first time since 2016 that a Cardinal has been named all-region and it’s the second time Pierce, who eclipsed 100 career goals, has received this honor.
After an undefeated regular season and 21-1 overall campaign, Wilkes Central landed six players on the All-Region 2A team for region eight. Wilkes Central Head Coach Jim Caudill was also named the 2A’s coach of the year for the region.
Three of those players — Zoe Susi, Sarah Lowe and Makenna Freeman — were freshmen.
Senior KT Adair and junior Emily Pontzer were named all-region for the first time in their high school careers. Junior Kaylin Bang became a two-time all-region selection with her honor. Bang was also named an all-region selection in 2018.
In addition to their all-region selections, midfielders Susi and Freeman joined an exclusive group of Wilkes County girls soccer players to be named to the NCSCA all-state team, which was announced last weekend. They were named to the 2A class.
It’s the first time Wilkes County has had an all-state selection since former Wilkes Central and Clemson University soccer player Tori Andreski was selected in 2011 and 2012.
“It’s huge. To get two freshmen on all-state is unheard of — this shows the respect they earned in the state,” said Caudill. “During the discussions for the players, the other coaches got into who was the stronger player. About half said Zoe for attacking prowess and half said Makenna for her overall command of the pitch. But at the end of the day, both were different players in the their roles but both were special players you don’t see often.”
Susi and Freeman became the eighth and ninth Wilkes County girls soccer players to be named all-state dating back to 1997.
In addition to those two and Andreski, Wilkes Central’s Anna Bauguess (1998), Amy Davidson (2000), Annie Gustafson (2008), Katie Andreski and Elizabeth Musson previously earned all-state distinction. West Wilkes’ Angelica Nichols was also named all-state back in 2008.
Along with Tori Andreski, Katie Andreski (2005 and 2006) and Musson (1999 and 2000) were two-time all-state selections.
Note: Alleghany and Starmount also had players named 1A all-region for region nine. Hazel Pasley was named from the Trojans while Stephanie Brown, Meyli Carrasco and Molly Maske were selected from the Rams.
