Several Wilkes County high school swimmers had runner-up showings Saturday at the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference swim finals at the Armfield Center in Pilot Mountain.
East Wilkes’ Sedessa Hatcher was runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke. East’s Alana Bauguess was second in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.
West Wilkes’ Hannah Hartzog took second in the 200 freestyle. West’s Kristen Church was second in the 50 freestyle. Wilkes Central’s Brianna Ormanzano placed second in the 500 freestyle. West’s Ethan Hurley was runner-up in the 100 backstroke and was a member of the 400 freestyle relay, with Samuel Lewczyk, Isaiah Lewczyk and Anthony Mackler.
Elkin won both the boys and girls team titles. The Wilkes Central boys were second and West Wilkes was third, only two points behind the Eagles. The East Wilkes girls were fourth, followed by Central and West.
Numerous swimmers are also in consideration for top-12 regional qualification, which will be announced early next week. West’s Hurley, Samuel Lewczyk, Isaiah Lewczyk and Mackler are in contention for the 200-meter medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Hurley is also a candidate for 200 individual medley, 200 free, 100 free, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Samuel Lewczyk is viable in the 100 free and 100 backstroke. West’s Church is in contention for the 100 backstroke.
Central’s Jacob Chapman, David Olson, Kendall Redies, Oliver Higgins and Sawyer Johnson might qualify in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Olson is a contender for 50 free, 100 free and 100 breaststroke.
Higgins could qualify for the 50 free, 100 free and 100 backstroke.
Redies is viable in the 200 individual medley.
East’s Hatcher is a candidate for the 200 individual medley, 50 free and 100 breaststroke.
Bauguess is in contention for 100 backstroke.
