Wilkes Central High School officials have canceled the 2021 boys soccer season due to a low turnout of players, according to the school’s athletic director, Chuck Cannon.

Cannon confirmed the canceled season on Monday. Central would have made its season debut today at West Wilkes under first-year coach Matt Matthews.

The Eagles considered not fielding a team last season after conducting their first practice of the season with only eight players.

The Eagle boys were 10-12 last year and were third in the MVAC with a 10-4 mark under Coach Jim Caudill. Caudill, coach of the Eagle boys since 2014, died on April 23, 2020.

Central has made seven straight appearances in the 2A state playoffs and was eliminated in 2019’s first round by Hibriten.

The Eagles are 58-3-1 in inter-county matches over the past 10 years. Their most recent loss to a county school was in 2016 at West Wilkes.
