The East Wilkes doubles team of senior Sylvia Prevette and junior Tristen Blevins competed in the 1A state tournament Friday at Cary Tennis Park.

Prevette and Blevins were turned back by the duo of Sebrina Grewal and Olivia Hankinson from Research Triangle Academy in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1.

“Sylvia and Tristen represented the school well at the tennis state championships,” said their coach, Aaron Simmons. “Unfortunately, they lost a well-contested match but we are proud of their accomplishments, efforts and sportsmanship this season.”

Grewal and Hankinson went on to defeat East Surry’s Tara Martin and Evelyn Ruedisueli in the championship finals on Saturday afternoon, 6-1, 6-2.

Prevette and Blevins finished fourth in the 1A West Regional tourney on June 19 to earn a spot in the state doubles quarterfinals. They were the only tennis players from Wilkes County to compete at the state level this year.
