Archery season for whitetail deer hunting in Wilkes County and every other county in North Carolina begins Saturday, Sept. 12. In Wilkes the season runs through Friday, Oct. 2.

CHAPEL HILL — Due to the threat from COVID-19 (otherwise known as the coronavirus), the North Carolina High School Athletic Association made the decision on Thursday afternoon to postpone the 2020 boy’s and girl’s basketball State championships indefinitely.

Brandon Robertson and Josh Day are tied at -11 going into the final hole of the 2018 Hillside Summer Throwdown, a PDGA B-tier tournament. They (along with three others) are playing hole 18 of the Rolling Pines Disc Golf Course in Wilkesboro on Aug. 5.

A drop in the number of deer bagged in Wilkes County and statewide in 2014-15 resulted largely from a bumper acorn crop, said an N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission official who until recently was in charge of deer and wild turkey research and surveys for the agency.
