Millers Creek Christian’s volleyball season got off to a great start on Thursday evening with a 3-0 victory against Triad Math and Science Academy inside Bumgarner Gym on the campus of Wilkes Community College.
The Lions, who have reached the Carolina Athletic Association for Schools of Choice state championship match each of the last two years, defeated the Tigers by scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-11.
According to Head Coach Natasha Evans, one of the big highlights for Millers Creek (1-0) came in the third set when Cameron Evans scored 11 consecutive points. The junior finished with nine service aces.
Caroline Watkins had a big game with seven kills and six service aces while Siri Hull — the Lions’ only senior on this year’s squad — finished with three service aces.
Millers Creek, which also improved to 1-0 in Central Carolina Conference play, returns to the court today at New Garden Friends School, beginning a three-match week for the Lions.
Then they’ll travel to Community Baptist on Thursday and return home the next day to face Heritage Christian. Triad Math and Science dropped to 0-2.
The Millers Creek Christian boys soccer team also opened up its season on Thursday and dropped an 8-1 decision to Triad Math and Science Academy.
The Lions, who travel to New Garden Friends today and Community Baptist on Thursday, scored its lone goal in the second half. The Tigers (1-0) scored six times in the second half.
