East Wilkes junior Tristen Blevins, here delivering a forehand earlier in the season, teamed up with Sylvia Prevette to win the MVAC 1A doubles title Monday in Elkin.

The East Wilkes tennis team faced some familiar foes Monday in the 1A finals of the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference tournament at Elkin High School.

It was an all-Cardinal championship battle as Brianna Martin defeated Kristie Brown in the 1A singles final and the duo of Sylvia Prevette and Tristen Blevins dropped Jordan Schubart and Kaleigh Couch in a tight doubles final.

Martin, a senior, emerged with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over junior Brown, and senior Prevette and junior Blevins dropped their first set to Schubart/Couch, 3-6, before taking the final two, 7-6 and 6-4.

All six Cardinals in the finals qualified for the 1A West Regional on June 18 in Elkin.

On the 2A side, the West Wilkes doubles team of junior Kendall Stanley and senior Paige Phillips finished second after falling in the finals to Ashe County’s Ashley Dollar and Sebrina Brooks, 6-2, 7-6.

Wilkes Central junior Riley Cearly defeated West Wilkes senior Lizzie Church, 6-4, 6-4, in the third-place singles match.

The North Wilkes doubles team of senior Rebekah Wilson and junior Allie Billings finished fourth after dropping the third-place match to Ashe’s Hannah York and Leigh McKenzie, 7-5, 6-3.

East girls three-peat

East Wilkes clinched its third-straight MVAC title with a 6-3 victory over Ashe County in West Jefferson on June 2.

“We are extremely proud of what our team has accomplished this season,” said East Coach Aaron Simmons, whose squad improved to 13-0. “Our team set this as a goal at the conclusion of our season in October of 2019 and were able to continue to work hard and maintain focus with the delay of the season lasting until April of this year.”

Simmons continued, “The players never once wavered in their commitment to our team, and it is rewarding to see their hard work pay off. Our juniors and seniors have shown remarkable leadership.”

In singles, Ashe’s top seed, Elizabeth Wallace, defeated Sylvia Prevette 6-2, 6-4; #2 Tristen Blevins (EW) d. Molly Rupard 6-2, 6-1; #3 Ashley Dollar (AC) d. Jordan Schubart 6-2, 6-1; #4 Brianna Martin (EW) d. Sebrina Brooks 6-3, 6-1; #5 Kristie Brown (EW) d. Leigh McKenzie 6-3, 6-0; and #6 Kaleigh Couch (EW) d. Hannah York 6-7, 6-1, 10-3.

Doubles action saw the top duo from Ashe, Wallace and Rupard, dropping Prevette and Blevins 9-8; #2 Schubart/Couch (EW) d. Dollar/Brooks 8-6; and #3 Martin/Brown (EW) d. McKenzie/York 8-3.

“Unfortunately, the state is not having a dual team state playoff this season, but we look forward to competing in the conference tournament on Monday with an opportunity for some of our players to qualify for the individual regional tournament,” Simmons added.

Cards sweep Trojans

East Wilkes took all nine matchups against Alleghany in Ronda on June 1.

In doubles, #1 Schubart/Couch d. Whitaker/Vestal 8-0; #2 Prevette/Brown d. Loggins/Lopez 8-0; and #3 Martin/Regan Johnson d. DeBord/Jones 8-0.

The Cardinals improved to 12-0 in the MVAC while the Trojans slipped to 0-11.

West sweeps Elkin

West Wilkes won two pro-set matches against host Elkin on Thursday, 8-1 and 7-2.

In singles, #1 Lizzie Church (WW) won twice over Mattie Wells, 8-1 and 8-2; #2 Paige Phillips (WW) d. Julie Cortez 8-1, 8-2; #3 Kendall Stanley (WW) d. Kendall Eads 8-0, 8-0; #4 Kaitlyn Wayne (WW) d. Alice Gwyn 8-3, 8-3; #5 Sydney Church (WW) d. Bronwyn Sloop 8-1, 8-4; and #6 Ivy Bledsoe (WW) split matches with Laura Couch 8-5, 8-1.

In doubles, #1 Phillips/Stanley (WW) d. Cortez/Wells 8-1, 8-1; #2 L. Church/Wayne (WW) d. Sloop/Gwyn 8-0, 8-0; and #3 Couch/Eads (EL) d. Bledsoe/S. Church 8-5, 8-5.

The Blackhawks bettered to 8-4 in the MVAC.

Rams take Vikings

Starmount posted a 7-2 win over North Wilkes in Boonville on Thursday.

In singles, #1 Caroline Wood (ST) d. Rebekah Wilson 6-2, 6-2; #2 Camryn Shore (ST) d. Taylor Wood 6-0, 6-2; #3 Anna Serrano (ST) d. Brook Settle 6-2, 6-0; #4 Adan Lakey (ST) d. Beth Settle 6-2, 6-0; #5 Rashell Fuentes (ST) d. Sunny Johnson 6-0, 6-0; and #6 Mary Cothren (NW) d. Mattie Tevano 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Doubles results were #1 Wood/Shore (ST) d. Wilson/Wood 9-8 (7-3); #2 Serrano/Lakey (ST) d. Settle/Settle 8-4; and #3 Johnson/Cothren (NW) d. Lorrenzo/Maldonado 8-3.

The Vikings stand at 2-10 in the MVAC.

Eagles thump Trojans

Wilkes Central posted an 8-1 victory at Alleghany in Sparta on Thursday.

The Eagles improved to 7-5 in the MVAC.

Hawks trips Rams

West Wilkes defeated Starmount, 7-2, in Millers Creek on June 1.

In singles, top-seeded Lizzie Church of West defeated Carolina Wood 6-1, 6-2; #2 Paige Phillips (WW) d. Camryn Shore 6-0, 4-6, 10-1; #3 Kendall Stanley (WW) d. Anna Serrano 6-0, 6-0; #4 Adan Lakey (ST) won 0-6, 6-4, 10-8; #5 Rashell Fuentes (ST) won 6-3; 6-2; and #6 Ivy Bledsoe (WW) d. Mattie Tavano 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles action saw Phillips and Stanley drop Wood/Shore 8-2; the other West doubles teams of Church/Kaitlyn Wayne and Bledsoe/Sydney Church were also victorious.

Elkin foils North

North Wilkes came up short, 7-2, against Elkin in Hays on June 1.

North’s Rebekah Wilson won at #1 singles, posting a 7-6, 6-2 win over Mattie Wells. Wilson and Taylor Wood, at #2 doubles, were also victorious, 8-0.

Ashe rakes Central

Ashe County blanked Wilkes Central, 9-0, in Moravian Falls on June 1. The Eagles fell to 6-5 with the home setback.
