Junior Boone Beaver broke a 14-14 tie with a 10-yard touchdown run with 2:43 to play, and the Buckin’ Elks won their fourth straight game to hold on to a share of first place in the Mountain Valley Conference with Ashe County.

Junior quarterback Brett Beaver threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Ty Parsons on the second play of the fourth quarter to snap a 7-7 tie and give Elkin a 14-7 lead.

But the Cardinals answered with an 11-play drive, taking advantage of an Elkin pass interference penalty on fourth down from the Elkin 46.

East Wilkes senior quarterback Caeden Howell picked up a first down with a 7-yard pass to Bryson Sidden and picked up another himself with a 5-yard run.

Two plays later, Howell threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior Trey Lambert to tie the game at 14 with 5:57 remaining in the game.

Boone Beaver’s score capped an eight-play, 64-yard drive that used over three minutes.

The Elks opened the scoring on Tyler Mayes’ 1-yard touchdown run with 7:14 before halftime.

East Wilkes tied the game 7-7 on its next possession when Howell threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Vernon.

If Elkin wins Friday at Alleghany, it will have no worse than a share of its first conference championship since 2014.
