Ashe County scored 22 unanswered fourth quarter points to post a 44-28 come-from-behind victory over North Wilkes Friday night in West Jefferson.

The Huskies improved to a perfect 3-0 in Mountain Valley Athletic Conference play with the win, and 4-3 overall. The Vikings dropped to 1-2 and 4-3.

Turnovers told the story. After a Ben Winters touchdown helped put the Vikings up 28-22 on the first play of the fourth quarter, the North defense stopped the next Huskies’ possession and gave the offense the ball back.

But after only two plays from scrimmage an interception by Ashe’s J.J. Mannan gave his squad first down at the North 29, and seven plays later Drake Elliott gave the Huskies the lead for good with a 1-yard rumble and a 29-28 tally.

Two plays from scrimmage later a North fumble was recovered by the home team, and another Elliott score six plays after the recovery helped make it 37-28 with 4:43 left to play.

The ensuing North drive ended in a pick-six from defensive-back Austin Poe. That ended the scoring, and gave the Huskies a homecoming win.

Dylan Church also scored for the Vikings, and Michael Bell ran the second-half kick-off back 85 yards for the touchdown. Quarterback Cole Chipman also found Bell for a 40-hard scoring pass in the third.
