In a race that came down to the wire, Elkin captured the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference title by defeating Ashe County by four strokes on April 27 at Roaring Gap Club.
Led by Roaring Gap medalist (37 strokes) and MVAC champion James Owings (310), the Buckin’ Elks leapfrogged the Huskies on April 27, going from two strokes down to winning by two shots (1,624 to 1,626).
East Wilkes finished fourth at Roaring Gap (180) and in the MVAC season standings (1,703). East’s Tucker Settle led the team on April 27 (41) and was fifth overall (332). He was followed by Brady Hall (43, 357 [ninth]) and Mason Lyons (44, 386 [16th]).
North Wilkes finished fifth at Roaring Gap (183) and in the MVAC season standings (1,741). North’s Carter Huffman led the team on April 27 (42) and was 14th overall (378). He was followed by Tanner York (45, 353 [seventh]) and Briley Wyatt (46, 415 [25th]).
Wilkes Central finished sixth at Roaring Gap (188) and in the MVAC season standings (1,751). Central’s Jacob Demeny led the team on April 27 (39) and was sixth overall (336). He was followed by Blake Hayes (45, 356 [eighth]) and Brice Smithey (51, 426 [28th]).
West Wilkes finished seventh at Roaring Gap (211) and in the MVAC season standings (1,935).
West’s Tanner Estes led the team on April 27 (50) and was 19th overall (396).
He was followed by Caleb Roten (51, 437 [30th]) and Andrew Barlowe (52, 411 [21st]).
Mountain Aire results
Ashe County took top honors April 22 at Mountain Aire Golf Course in West Jefferson.
Ashe finished first with 174 strokes, followed by Elkin (175), Starmount (181), Wilkes Central (182), North Wilkes (191) East Wilkes (194), West Wilkes (202) and Alleghany (225).
The match co-medalists were Central’s Blake Hayes and East’s Tucker Settle, who both shot 38s. Elkin’s James Owings was third with a 39.
Central’s other top scores were posted by Jacob Demeny (44) and Brice Smithey (46).
After Settle, East’s leaders were Rylan Byrd (49) and Brady Hall (50).
North was paced by Trent Sidden (47), Carter Huffman (47), Tanner York (48) and Briley Wyatt (49).
West’s low rounds were shot by Corbin Roupe (44), Tanner Estes (45), Andrew Barlowe (50) and Caleb Roten (52).
