The East Wilkes junior varsity and varsity football teams are the latest Wilkes County prep sports squads with game postponements due to positive COVID-19 tests.
The school announced today (Tuesday) that games against Mount Airy (JVs Thursday in Mount Airy and varsity Friday in Ronda) have been postponed. The games would have been East’s debuts in the new Northwest 1A Conference.
It was also announced that next Friday’s games against Elkin have also been postponed. The varsity contest was slated to be played in Elkin next Friday, while the JV matchup would have been in Ronda next Thursday.
On Thursday, the school announced the following revised varsity football schedule:
• at Elkin on Monday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m.;
• at North Stokes on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m.; and
• hosting Mount Airy on Monday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
The Cardinal soccer team is also currently sidelined due to COVID-19. East was scheduled to play at North Wilkes on Sept. 8, but that game was canceled, according to East Coach Austin Bare.
The East strikers are scheduled to open their Northwest 1A schedule by hosting South Stokes on Monday, Sept. 20.
The West Wilkes varsity and junior varsity football teams, the North Wilkes varsity football team and the Wilkes Central varsity football teams all missed two games earlier this season due to many players being placed into quarantine protocol.
The West Wilkes varsity volleyball team missed three games due to positive COVID-19 cases before taking the court again on Sept. 7.
The East Wilkes volleyball game slated for Aug. 25 at Ashe County High School was canceled due to COVID-19 cases at the West Jefferson school.
