In singles play, top-seeded Dylan Ward of East defeated Ryan Milam 6-0, 6-0; #2 Dylan Black d. Logan Goss 6-0, 6-0; #3 Braxton Long d. Isaiah Lewczyk 6-0, 6-0; #4 Nathaniel Burchette d. Sam Lewczyk 6-0, 6-0; #5 Cole Macemore d. Ben Flora 6-1, 6-2; and #6 Luke Macemore d. Matthew Blankenship 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, #1 Ward/Black dropped Milam/I. Lewczyk 8-0; #2 Long/Burchette d. Goss/Flora 8-1; and #3 Macemore/Macemore d. S. Lewczyk/Blankenship 8-1.
The Cardinals improved to 4-1 in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference while the Blackhawks backtracked to 1-4.
Central wipes North
Wilkes Central suffered no defeats in a 9-0 blanking of North Wilkes in Hays on Monday.
In singles, #1 Tate Johnson d. Aiden Jennings 6-1, 6-0; #2 Jack Shepherd d. Mitch Adams 6-3, 6-1; #3 Nick Hall d. Dalton Wyatt 6-1, 6-1; #4 Gage York d. Caleb Parsons 6-1, 6-0; and #5 Quinn Pyke d. Lucas Berrier 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, #1 Johnson/Shepherd d. Jennings/Adams 8-1 and #2 Hall/Pyke won 8-2.
The Eagles bettered to 3-2 in the MVAC while the Vikings are winless in five matches.
Ashe sweeps West
Ashe County took all nine matches against West Wilkes in West Jefferson on March 24.
The Huskies improved to 2-2 while the Blackhawks faltered to 1-3.
Elkin shuts out WC
Host Elkin posted a 9-0 whitewashing of Wilkes Central on March 24.
The Buckin’ Elks bettered to 3-0 while the Eagles slipped to 2-2.
Rams clips Vikings
Starmount defeated North Wilkes, 6-1, on March 23 in Boonville.
Mitch Adams posted the lone win for the Vikings, at number-two singles.
Elkin doubles up East
Elkin assumed the top spot in the MVAC by edging East Wilkes 6-3 on Friday in Elkin.
The Buckin’ Elks (4-0) took all three doubles matches on Friday to conclude the match that was postponed after the teams split the six singles matchups on March 23.
In singles, East’s #1 Dylan Ward defeated Patrick Soos 6-3, 6-3; Elkin #2 Owen Jennings d. Dylan Black 6-1, 6-2; East #3 Braxton Long d. Jack Zamudio 7-6 (9-7), 6-3; East #4 Nathaniel Burchette d. Thomas McComb 3-6, 6-4, 11-9; Elkin #5 Caeson Baker d. Cole Macemore 6-2, 7-5; and Elkin #6 Anthony Parrett d. Luke Macemore 6-3, 7-6 (8-3).
East (3-1) had its eight-match win streak, which included the five matches of the aborted 2020 campaign, snapped. The Cardinals finished second to Elkin in the last full MVAC season in 2019.
Ashe blanks Central
Ashe County suffered no defeats in a match with Wilkes Central in Moravian Falls on March 23.
Central sophomores Gage York and Andrew Nieland lost in tiebreakers at #4 and #6 singles, respectively. Senior Jack Shepherd won six games at #2 single and was selected as Coach Ashley Clonch’s player of the match.
The Eagles slipped to 2-1 while the Huskies improved to 1-2.
Alleghany stops West
Alleghany dropped West Wilkes, 8-1, in Millers Creek on March 23.
West’s lone win came at #5 singles, where senior Ben Flora defeated Rodolfo Lopez, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
The Blackhawks fell to 1-2, the same mark as the Trojans.
