The East Wilkes boys finished first among 1A schools in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference golf match held April 20 at Oakwoods Country Club in Wilkesboro.

The Cardinals finished the nine-hole event in 179 strokes, which edged Elkin’s 182 strokes. They were followed in the team standings by Starmount (195) and Alleghany (243).

The event medalist was Elkin’s James Owings, who shot a 39. East’s Brady Hall was runners-up at 40 strokes.

East’s other top finishers were Tucker Settle (42), Mason Lyons (45), R. Sanders (52) and Rylan Byrd (56).

Cedarbrook results

Wilkes Central took second place among 2A teams April 20 at Cedarbrook Country Club in State Road.

Ashe County finished first with 186 strokes, followed by Central (193), North Wilkes (202) and West Wilkes (222).

The match co-medalists were Central’s Blake Hayes and Ashe’s Jake Patton, who both shot 41s. Central’s Jacob Demeny and Ashe’s Joseph Shaw finished tied for third with 45s.

Central’s other top scores were posted by Roman O’Sullivan (53) and Brice Smithey (54).

North was paced by Tanner York (49), Samuel Rhodes (50), Briley Wyatt (50) and Carter Huffman (53).

West’s low rounds were shot by Tanner Estes (51), Andrew Barlowe (52), Caleb Roten (59) and Landon Gambill (60).

Overall MVAC standings after April 20 are Elkin (1,090 strokes), Starmount (1,091), Ashe (1,093), East Wilkes (1,142), North Wilkes (1,165), Wilkes Central (1,188), West Wilkes (1,300) and Alleghany (1,393).
