The Wilkes Central varsity volleyball team opened its season Monday with a three-set sweep of Freedom in Morganton.

The Eagles took the nonconference match from the Patriots, 26-24, 25-16 and 25-19.

“It was a good way to start the season of course, but we have some things we need to clean up,” said Kevin Anderson, Central’s coach. “It was really good just to be able to compete once again with all our fans in the gym. Coach (Connor) Townsend does a good job with her team and they hustled really well.”

Anderson said his team’s serving was “really good, we had some key blocks from Zoe (Mathis) and Olivia (Rush).”

He added that junior Jayla Smoker “placed her hits well, and LindaGrace (York) and Chloe (Lyon) hit really well.”

North opener canceled

North Wilkes’ scheduled season opener against Ashe County in Hays on Monday was canceled due to COVID-19 quarantining of the Huskies squad, according to North Coach Samantha Smith.

“Ashe has had to cancel a lot of their games because of COVID issues,” Smith explained.

The Vikings were slated to open their season Tuesday by hosting Alleghany in another non-league matchup.
