It was the season and Foothills 2A Conference opener for the Eagles. The Greyhounds dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

In singles, top-seeded Whitley Hege of North Surry defeated Riley Cearly 6-3, 6-1; #2 Carol Vasquez (WC) d. Katie Butler 6-3, 6-0; #3 Caroline Langston (WC) d. Molly Reeves 6-1, 6-4; #4 Meagan Black (WC) d. Allyn-Claire Simmons 6-3, 6-0; #5 Carrigan Willard (NS) d. Breanna Hemric 6-1, 6-1; and #6 LilyKate Young (WC) d. Clara Burke 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 10-7.

Hege and Butler of North Surry dropped Cearly and Vasquez in #1 doubles, 8-3; #2 Langston/Black (WC) d. Reeves/Simmons 8-6; and Willard/Jacey Ward (NS) won by DNF over Hemric/Young.

Young was named the Eagles’ player of the match.

Surry Central sweeps West

Surry Central blanked West Wilkes in Millers Creek on Monday, 9-0. It was the season and Foothills 2A Conference opener for both clubs.

In singles, top-seeded Rachel Carter defeated Kendall Stanley 6-1, 2-6, 10-2; #2 Ellen Bryant d. Ivy Bledsoe 6-4, 6-1; #3 McKenna Merritt d. Nena Hunt 6-1, 6-0; #4 Karlie Robertson d. Madison McGlamery 6-0, 6-0; #5 Madelyn Wilmoth d. McKenzie Livingston 7-5, 2-6, 10-7; and #6 Priscilla Gentry d. Kaleigh Bitner 6-3, 6-2.

The #1 doubles team of Bryant and Carter dropped Stanley and Bledsoe, 8-2; #2 Robertson/Wilmoth d. Hunt/McGlamery 8-2; and #3 Mitzy Vasquez/Kaesi Blythe d. Livingston/Bitner 8-5.

Cardinals sweep Vikings

East Surry whitewashed North Wilkes, 9-0, in Pilot Mountain on Monday.

It was the season and Foothills 2A Conference opener for the Vikings. The Cardinals evened their mark at 1-1 with the victory.

East Surry winners in both singles and doubles were Tara Martin, Evelyn Ruedisueli, Rosie Craven, Haley Chilton, Chloe Koons and Sophie Hutchens.

East sweeps Ashe

East Wilkes moved to 2-0 on the preseason with a clean sweep of Ashe County on Thursday in West Jefferson.

In singles, #1 Tristen Blevins defeated Julia Herman 6-1, 6-1; #2 Hallie Younger d. Claira Corley 6-1, 7-5; #3 Kristie Brown d. Zada Little 6-2, 6-1; #4 Savannah Sparks d. Bailey Richardson 6-0, 6-1; #5 Emily Spicer d. Maleah Lovell 6-2, 6-4; and #6 Valerie Schubart d. Ali Eller 6-3, 6-3.

Doubles action saw #1 Blevins/Brown dropping Herman/Corley 8-3; #2 Younger/Savannah Sparks d. Little/Lovell 8-1; and #3 Spicer/Salem Sparks d. Richardson/Eller 8-2.

East clips CSD

East Wilkes opened its season with a narrow 5-4 nonconference victory at Community School of Davidson on Aug. 18.
