The Wilkes Central boys finished first and the Eagle girls took second in the Foothills 2A pre-conference cross country meet held Thursday at Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Airy.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the way my teams ran,” said Colby Shell, Central’s coach. “We went out smart and caught a lot of people in the heat. My kids have been training hard five days a week and they deserved this one.”
In the boys 5 kilometer race, Central’s Quinn Pyke was runner-up with a time of 18:33.9. The top finisher was Surry Central’s Ignacio Morales (17:58.2).
“I had big performances out of my five newcomers,” noted Shell. “Quinn stamped himself as a conference contender. Sean (Wilson, fifth at 19:46) ran a gutsy race. Kaleb (Thornton, eighth at 20:37.7) ran the smartest race of anyone. Gavyn (Stone, 10th at 20:59.4) finished stronger than any kid on the field.”
Top finishers from North Wilkes were Braeden Foster (fourth, 19:15.9) and Mitch Adams (13th, 21:34.8). The West Wilkes boy were paced by Wesley Furr (18th, 23:03.6) and Isaiah Lewczyk (19th, 23:13).
The Surry Central girls rode the top times of Yeira Munoz (22:30.4) and Rubi Cortes-Rosa (22:37.7) to a team title.
“On the girls side it was about newcomers as well,” added Shell. “Faith Reeves (third, 22:40.3) stamped herself as a contender and Peyton (Gage, fourth, 23:10.8) reminded everyone why she is a top runner.
“Ari (Redies, eighth, 24:11.9) ran awesome in her first high school race, really coming on strong at the end. Isabelle (Curry, 11th, 24:58.7) is always the picture of consistency for our ladies team. Lots of season left and anything can happen come time for the actual conference meet.”
The North Wilkes girls were led by Natalie Mathis (10th, 24:41.1) while West Wilkes was represented by Krissa Whalen (21st, 32:11.1) and Mady Hoover (24th, 32:59.8).
