The Wilkes Central boys finished first in a tight Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference golf match held March 29 at Oakwoods Country Club in Wilkesboro.
The Eagles finished with a team score of 385 strokes for its top five golfers over the 18-hole layout. Ashe County was only a stroke back at 386. North Wilkes scored 409 and West Wilkes came in at 433.
The individual medalist was Ashe’s Jake Patton, who carded a score of 41-39 on the nines for a total of 80 on the par-72 course.
Central’s Blake Hayes (44-42) and Jacob Demeny (43-43) both shots 86s.
The Eagle boys are the defending MVAC champions from 2019 and have captured three of the past four league crowns. Central won back-to-back state 2A titles in 2016 and 2017.
North was paced by senior Tanner York (54-45) and freshman Carter Huffman (49-50), who both shot 99.
West’s best score was carded by T. Estes (47-49=96). A. Barlowe shot 107 (56-51).
Among girl teams, Ashe finished first with 157 strokes, followed by West Wilkes (178) and Wilkes Central (179).
The girl medalist was Ashe senior Ashley Hardin, who carded a 47 over nine holes of play. Teammate Emma Goodman, also a senior, was second with a 54.
West’s T. McGlamery led her club with a 55. Tori Teague followed her with a 61.
Emma Noble paced the Eagles with a 57. Ashlyn Landrum and Abbygail Farrish each finished in 61 strokes.
