Wilkes County all-star baseball teams are ready to begin defense of their District 2 championships.

Four different age groups and five Wilkes County all-star teams will begin their Tar Heel League district tournaments on Saturday and conclude a week later.

Only the winner in Midget League, Little League and Junior League will advance to the state tournament while the top three teams from Coach Pitch will advance.

The state tournaments are scheduled for July 25-28 in Smithfield.

Junior League

Wilkes County returns to Tar Heel League all-stars after a successful run last summer as a member of the North Carolina Babe Ruth League. The run ended with a trip to the Southeast Regional tournament in Florida.

Wilkes County begins its district tournament run on Monday against Watauga at Stanford Park Field at 6 p.m. in Hickory. The winner will face host Hickory at 6 p.m. Wednesday while the loser will play an elimination game on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m.

Little League

Wilkes County will be part of the seven-team field to play in the Little League district tournament, which begins Monday at Davis Field on the campus of Alleghany High School.

Wilkes’ tournament run will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday against Yancey County. The winner will face the winner of Ashe County and Watauga Blue on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The losers of those two games will face an elimination game at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The week-long tournament will conclude on Saturday, July 13, at 3 p.m.

Midget League

Wilkes County will have the opportunity to repeat as district champions on home dirt as it will host the Midget League district tournament, which will start on Saturday at Cub Creek Field. There will be six teams in the field.

Wilkes’ tournament run begins on Saturday at noon against the winner of Hickory and Ashe County. Those two teams play earlier on Saturday.

A win advances Wilkes County into the finals of the winner’s bracket, which will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The loser of that game will play on Monday at 5:30 p.m. against the loser of the Alleghany/Watauga game.

The championship game is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Pitch

Two Wilkes County teams will be among the six teams vying for the District 2 championship, which begins on Tuesday at the Ashe County Parks and Recreation Fields in Jefferson.
