JoRaye Morrison, who had a hand in both of Wilkes Central's touchdowns on Friday night, rushed for a game-high 185 yards.

The Wilkes Central Eagles dropped to 1-1 Friday night in Moravian Falls as 3A Alexander Central defeated the Eagles 28-12.

The Cougars were paced by running back Steven Montgomery, who rushed for 114 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. Wilkes Central’s JoRaye Morrison was the game’s leading rusher with 185 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.

Despite dominating time of possession (32:29 compared to Alexander Central’s 15:31), the Eagles were unable to cash in on their early drives. Alexander Central looked to be taking a two-touchdown lead into the half after a 56-yard Josh Abernathy touchdown reception from Lance Justice gave the Cougars a 14-0 lead.

The Eagles responded three minutes later when Morrison capped off a nine-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 14-6. The extra point attempt failed, leaving the Eagles trailing by 6 going into halftime.

Central’s defense came up big to start the second half, forcing a punt from deep in Cougar territory. Wilkes Central took possession at the Alexander Central 35-yard line. The Eagles scored again nine plays later, this time via a halfback pass from Morrison to Ethan Dobson to cut the Cougar lead to 14-12. Josh Pack’s two point conversion attempt would come up about a yard short of tying the game.

As the game moved deep into the fourth quarter, fatigue began to set in for the Eagles, and the Cougars took advantage. Rushing touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter wrapped up the scoringl.

Alexander Central travels to Statesville next week in a match of unbeatens while the Eagles will play host to Surry Central in Moravian Falls. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.
