Backhand winner

East Wilkes senior Dylan Black returns a backhand for a winner in his #2 singles victory against Ashe County’s Tatum Brown on March 16 in Ronda. Black also teamed with senior Dylan Ward for a win in #1 doubles.

The East Wilkes tennis team moved to 3-0 in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Athletic Conference with a 9-0 whitewashing of North Wilkes in Hays on Monday.

In singles play, top-seeded Dylan Ward defeated Aiden Jennings 6-0, 6-1; #2 Dylan Black d. Mitch Adams 6-0, 6-0; #3 Braxton Long d. Dalton Wyatt 6-0, 6-0; #4 Nathaniel Burchette d. Caleb Parsons 6-1, 6-2; #5 Cole Macemore d. Lucas Berrier 6-1, 6-0; and #6 won by default.

In doubles, #1 Cole Macemore/Luke Macemore d. Jennings/Adams 8-4; #2 Grady Holleman/Reid West d. Wyatt/Parsons 8-3; and #3 EW won by default.

Cardinals blank Trojans

East Wilkes pitched another shutout in Ronda on March 17, defeating Alleghany 9-0.

In singles, #1 seed Dylan Ward defeated Camden Debord 6-0, 6-0; #2 Dylan Black d. Carlos Azuara-Ramos 6-0, 6-0; #3 Braxton Long d. Kaden Miller 6-0, 6-2; #4 Nathaniel Burchette d. Zander Russell 7-5, 7-6; #5 Cole Macemore d. Rodolfo Lopez 6-1, 6-2; and #6 Luke Macemore d. Caleb Phillips 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, #1 Ward/Black d. Debord/Azuara-Ramos 8-1; #2 Long/Burchette d. Miller/Lopez 8-1; and #3 Macemore/Macemore d. Russell/Phillips 8-5.

West trips North

West Wilkes volleyed past North Wilkes in Millers Creek on March 17, 7-2.

In singles, #1 seed Ryan Milam (WW) defeated Aiden Jennings 6-3, 6-3; #2 Logan Goss (WW) d. Mitch Adams 6-4, 2-6, 10-6; #3 Dalton Wyatt (NW) d. Issaiah Lewczyk 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 11-9; #4 Sam Lewczyk (WW) d. Caleb Parsons 6-1, 6-1; #5 Ben Flora (WW) d. Lucas Berrier 4-6, 6-2, 10-6; and #6 Jakob Brannan (WW) won in a walk-off.

In doubles, #1 Jennings/Adams (NW) d. Milam/I. Lewczyk 8-4; #2 Flora/Goss (WW) d. Wyatt/Parsons 8-6; and #3 WW def. NW WO.

The Blackhawks evened their mark at 1-1. The Vikings slipped to 0-2.

Central blanks Alleghany

Wilkes Central took all nine matchups at Alleghany on March 16. It was the season opener for both squads.

In singles, #1 seed Tate Johnson defeated Camden Debord 6-3, 6-1; #2 Jack Shepherd d. Carlos Azuara-Ramos 7-5, 6-1; #3 Nick Hall d. Kaden Miller 2-6, 7-5, 10-8; #4 Quinn Pyke d. Zander Russell 7-5, 6-4; #5 Gage York d. Rodolfo Lopez 6-3, 6-0; and #6 Andrew Nieland d. Caleb Phillips 6-4, 6-3.

Rams butt West

West Wilkes dropped its season opener on March 16 at Starmount in Boonville, 7-2.

Posting wins for the Blackhawks were senior Ben Flora at #5 singles and senior Jakob Brannan at #6 singles.

Eagles ace Rams

Wilkes Central improved to 2-0 with an 8-1 win over Starmount in Moravian Falls on March 17.

Elkin denies North

Elkin blanked North Wilkes, 9-0, in the season opener for both teams in Hays on March 15.

North junior Dalton Wyatt won one game in his #3 singles match and the #1 doubles team of sophomore Aiden Jennings and freshman Mitch Adams also won a single game.
