West Wilkes erased a non-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter to hand visiting North Iredell its first loss of the season with a 55-52 non-conference victory Tuesday evening in Millers Creek.
The Blackhawks trailed 48-39 with 5:09 left to play after North Iredell’s Beckham Tharpe scored on an offensive rebound and put back.
But West Wilkes scored the game’s next nine points, and tied things up at 48-all with a steal and lay-up from Jacob Brown at the 1:37 mark.
After a miss by the Raiders’ Jackson Hawkins, Brown swished a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the home team the lead for good. And key free throws from Jaden Wentz and Dylan Miller down the stretch helped keep the visitors at bay.
Brown led all scorers with 20 points, and Miller chipped in 12 for the Hawks, now 2-1.
Hawkins led a balanced Raiders’ attack with 12 points. North Iredell fell to 2-1.
West Wilkes girls 40, North Iredell 30
West Wilkes stayed perfect on the young season with a 40-30 non-conference win over visiting North Iredell Tuesday night in Millers Creek.
The Blackhawks, now 3-0, trailed 18-17 at the break, in part because of two late free throws by the Raiders’ Lily Ward.
But West took the lead in the third period of play after junior guard Jamilyn Wilcox recorded a steal and went the distance for the lay-up at the 5:38 mark. And the Blackhawks would not relinquish that advantage the rest of the way.
Wilcox and freshman Parker Childress scored seven points for the Hawks, and sophomore teammate Carson Ledford led all scorers on the evening with 14.
North Iredell dropped to 0-3 with the loss. Skylin Guill led the Raiders with eight points against a stingy Hawks’ defense, which held the visitors to single-digit scoring in the game’s final three quarters.
