North Wilkes started strong and easily scored a 60-42 victory over Elkin Friday night in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference contest in Hays.

The Vikings stormed out to an 18-3 first quarter advantage, buoyed by a balanced offense and a tenacious defense that kept the Elks off balanced.

The balance was evident as four different Vikings - Makayla Cornelius, Kate Brown, McKenzie Johnson and Liz Martin - hit double digits Friday. Cornelius led the way with 13 points, hitting three triples in an 18-14 third quarter run.

Elkin’s Audrey Jennings led all scorers with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Vikings from improving to 11-10 overall and 3-8 in league play. The Elks dropped to 3-16 and 1-10.

North Wilkes also won the JV game 21-17. Brook Settle scored nine points and Beth Settle added six as the Vikings held the Elks to only two first half points. Madison Mauldin scored nine for the Elks, all in the second half, but the Elks couldn’t complete the late comeback.

After the girls’ varsity game the school announced the North Wilkes Hall of Fame class for 2019-20. Inductees this year were former two-time state-champion wrestler Kehly Roberts, long-time coach and former three-sport athlete Mark Shumate, athletic booster Larry Thompson and former English teacher Angela Vandett.

Elkin boys 50, North Wilkes 48

Shane Price drilled a shot from the right short corner at the buzzer to help Elkin earn a thrilling 50-48 win over North Wilkes Friday evening in Hays.

The Mountain Valley Athletic Conference win improved the Elks to 7-12 overall and 6-5 in league play, while the Vikings dropped to 6-15 and 2-9.

Elkin led for most of the game, but the Vikings tied things up at 48-all in the fourth when Trenton Sidden drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 32 seconds left on the clock.

The Elks held the ball for the final shot, calling a late time-out to set up one last play. And Price, a senior guard, came through in the clutch, scoring the last and biggest of his seven points on the night.

Austin Longworth paced the visitors with 14 points. Zack Carlton led the home team with 13 points and Matthew Holloway scored 10.

Elkin claimed the JV tilt 45-34. Brennen Robinson scored 23 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, to lead all scorers. Brandon Holloway and Zack Wyatt each had nine for North Wilkes.
