The North Wilkes varsity volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Ashe County in West Jefferson on Thursday.
The Vikings won the first set of the nonconference game, 26-24, but the Huskies took the final three sets, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-15.
The Huskies, playing their first match after two weeks of COVID-19 quarantining, improved to 1-1 while the Vikings slipped to 2-4.
Elkin sweeps East
Elkin dispatched visiting East Wilkes in three sets on Thursday, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-12.
The Buckin’ Elks are 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest 1A Conference. The Cardinals slipped to 1-3, 0-2.
Surry Central drops Central
Surry Central posted a three-set win over Wilkes Central in Dobson on Thursday.
It was the Foothills 2A Conference opener for the Golden Eagles, who are 6-0 overall. The Eagles backslid to 3-5, 0-2.
Bears claw Cards
Mount Airy swept East Wilkes in Ronda on Aug. 31. It was the Northwest 1A Conference opener for both squads.
The Bears took a 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the Cardinals.
With the win, Mount Airy bettered to 3-4 overall. East fell to 1-2.
North Surry trips Central
North Surry spoiled Wilkes Central’s senior night by taking a four-set win over the Eagles on Aug. 31.
The Greyhounds emerged with a 25-20, 15-25, 25-15, 25-16 win in the Foothills 2A Conference opener for both clubs.
Central seniors Sydney Ferguson, Olivia Rush, Katie Nichols, Zoe Mathis and LindaGrace York were recognized during the match.
North Surry improved to 2-5 overall while Central slipped to 3-4.
Cardinals sweep Vikings
East Surry took a three-set victory over North Wilkes in Pilot Mountain on Aug. 31. It was the Foothills 2A Conference opener for both teams.
The Cardinals posted a 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 victory, which upped their record to 5-0. The Vikings backpedaled to 2-3.
