The Wilkes County 15U baseball all-star team bowed out of the double-elimination Tar Heel Leagues District 2 tournament in Hickory with a pair of losses on July 13.
After dropping a 9-5 decision to the hosts and eventual champions, the Wilkes all-stars were stopped by Watauga County, 14-5.
“I’m so proud of our Wilkes Junior League All-Stars,” said Brian Evans, the head coach. “They have worked so hard over the past several weeks to come together as a team.”
Evans thanked assistant coaches Lester Barlow, Matthew Higgins and Joey Billings for their help. “I would also like to thank our players, parents and all the fans from Wilkes County who came out to support us. “
In the opener, the score was tied 5-5 in the top of the seventh before Hickory got a “couple of timely hits into the sun which broke the game open with Hickory pulling out the victory,” according to Evans.
Against Hickory, Mason Billings went 2-for-4 with an RBI, run scored and stolen base. Noah Royall went 1-for-3 at the plate, drove in and scored a run and stole two bases.
Royall also pitched three innings and recorded three strikeouts.
In the loss to Watauga, Billings had two doubles, going 3-for-4 at the plate and scoring a run. Drew Winkler scored three runs, going 1-for-2 at the plate and walking twice.
“We had to turn around and play a second game 30 minutes later and it was a tough turnaround,” noted Evans. “We could not put anything together.”
