The Wilkes County 10U baseball all-star team opened Tar Heel Leagues District 2 play on July 12 with an 11-1 victory over Mitchell County in Boone.
Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in the first and never trailed. Colby Tharpe drew a one-out walk and scored on Bradley Wiles’ double to left field.
Three more Wilkes runs crossed home in the third. After Tharpe reached on a fielder’s choice and Wiles singled to right center with two outs, Hunter Minton plated them both with a triple to left center. Minton later scored for a 4-0 lead.
Wilkes scored twice in the fourth after Trenton Walker and Brylee Shore drew walks and scored on Thad Anderson’s double to left.
In the Wilkes fifth, Minton doubled, Hayden Sampson and Raidyn Walters walked, Walker reached on an error and Shore drove in multiple runs with a triple. All five touched home in the frame.
Minton went the distance on the mound for Wilkes, allowing only hit and a single unearned run in the fifth. He walked five and struck out 10.
Wiles and Minton each went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the victors.
Yancey trips Wilkes
Wilkes dropped its next game against eventual district champion Yancey County, 7-1, on July 14.
Yancey took control with four runs in the third and iced the win with three more in the sixth.
Wilkes scored its lone run in the fifth. Levi Shelton and Logan Anker drew one-out walks, and after Shelton stole third, he scored on Colby Tharpe’s grounder to third that was misplayed.
Bradley Wiles and Hunter Minton shared mound duties for Wilkes.
Wilkes had three singles in the contest, collected by Tharpe, Minton and Trenton Walker.
Mitchell takes out Wilkes
Mitchell gained a measure of redemption by eliminating Wilkes in a tight game, 14-13, Thursday in the consolation finals.
Wilkes led 13-11 before Mitchell plated three runs in the fifth and retired Wilkes in the sixth to seal the win.
Wilkes scored eight runs in the fourth. Hunter Miller led off with a single and scored on Hayden Sampson’s double. Raidyn Walters reached on an infield error, Levi Shelton singled and Logan Anker walked. All three later scored.
Then Thad Anderson walked, Colby Tharpe singled and Bradley Wiles drove them in with a triple. Wiles later scored on a groundout.
Tharpe doubled in Shelton and Anker in the second inning and Sampson added an RBI triple in the third. Tharpe walked in the first and eventually scored on an infield error.
Tharpe, Miller, Sampson and Walters shared mound duties for Wilkes.
