Several sex crime cases were heard in the November session of Wilkes Superior Court, with Judge John O. Craig presiding.

Brian Joseph Perry, 39, of Boone pleaded guilty to six counts of first-degree statutory rape. Craig sentenced Perry to 198-298 months in prison, with 342 days credit for time in jail. He ordered that Perry register as a sex offender for life.

Perry was arrested in November 2020 by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office on a Wilkes County warrant on charges of two counts of statutory rape of a child by an adult and four counts of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult. According to the Watauga Democrat, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Leach said the case involved a victim who was 12 at the time of the offenses. The Wilkesboro Police Department charged Perry.

Johnny William Cleary pleaded no contest to 11 counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of statutory sex offense against a child. Craig sentenced Cleary to 15-27 months in prison, suspended, with 36 months of supervised probation. He ordered that Craig receive sex offender evaluation and treatment and register as a sex offender for 30 years.

Cesar Agusto Santos pleaded guilty while not admitting guilt to two counts of indecent liberties with a child. Craig sentenced Santos to 15-27 months in prison, suspended, with 36 months of supervised probation. He ordered Santos to register as a sex offender for 30 years and not have any contact with the victim.

Matthew Shawn Lovette was charged with statutory rape of a child and pleaded guilty to soliciting to commit statutory rape. Craig sentenced him to 24-48 months in prison, suspended, with 48 months of supervised probation. He ordered that Lovette register as a sex offender for 30 years, have no contact with the victim and receive sex offender treatment.
