What does right to choose mean?
Some abortion facts: Only about 12 countries in the world allow unrestricted abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy. Among those are China and North Korea. Only three of 42 European Union nations allow them after 15 weeks. It seems the extreme view world-wide is to allow unrestricted abortions after 12 weeks.
At 12 weeks, the baby in the womb, though tiny, has almost doubled in size over the past four weeks and is now fully formed, with all of the organs, muscles, limbs and bones in place. From that point on, nothing new forms, only growth occurs. The fetal heartbeat is detectable by ultrasound at five weeks, and at 10 weeks the heart is fully developed.
At six weeks, the brain has divided into its three sections and brainwaves are clearly detectable. The end of human life is usually defined by the cessation of brainwaves and heartbeat. Would not the presence of brainwaves and heartbeat also indicate the presence of life? Does not the protection of human life outweigh the right to privacy cited in the original Roe v Wade decision?
When we say “The right to choose,” let us be clear about exactly what we are choosing to do.
