Congratulations to Central Wilkes Middle School for taking fifth and sixth place in events at the N.C. Science Olympiad state competition.

Central Wilkes beat private, magnet and charter schools to take first place at the regional competition, earning an invitation to the state competition.

The team went on to beat hundreds of schools in the state contest. Academic competition requires incredible teamwork and months of preparation. They build planes, cars, bottle rockets and other mechanical items. Thanks to Howard Weaver and Julie Colglazier, team sponsors, who volunteer their time after school and on weekends despite North Carolina having among the lowest teacher salaries in the country.

Consider supporting a local Science Olympiad team to keep our kids thinking outside the box. One of these young men and women may cure cancer.
