I would like to thank the Wilkes Board of Education for putting back in place mask requirements. While controversial to some, it is the right choice. My child wearing a mask gives some protection, but an unmasked child with COVID lessens the safety level that would be in place if both were masked.

In the paraphrased words of one Tennessee parent: If those against masks are right and we put in a mask mandate, some children are inconvenienced against their will. If those favoring masks are right, but there is no mask requirement, children will die. This is not a “Give me liberty or give me death” issue. It is an issue of making personal sacrifices to safeguard the lives of others.

The board of education made good choices last year by putting protocols in place that allowed our children to be back in school most of the year. Hopefully we can do the same this year. Masks and vaccines do work. However, just when we were beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel we seem intent upon building more tunnel at the end of that light.

Agreed! I am so relieved by this decision. And it is not just about life or death. Some children will have long term Covid complications or permanent lung damage. Masks help keep all children safe. Just like wearing a seatbelt or a bike helmet. Will it prevent the worst from happening, not in all cases but you'll have a better chance than without.
