I was surprised and very pleased with your choosing to honor Pozy Roten as a World War II veteran who is buried in Europe. Pozy was my wife’s uncle.

The photo in the article (“They never made it home,” May 27 issue) is an old family photograph that I posted on a Belgian website several years ago honoring the 83rd Infantry Division.

On the front page of the Sept. 2, 1943, edition of the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, Pozy is pictured with two of his friends, brothers Don and Everette Royal of McGrady, who also had joined the Army.

When the war ended, Don returned home and married Pozy’s sister, Northa Black. They were my wife’s parents.

Thank you for honoring our nation’s fallen, especially those who never made it back to American soil.

McGrady, N.C.
