The news of the Wilkes Journal-Patriot’s sale to Kentucky-based Paxton Media Group is bittersweet. It’s encouraging to know that their reporting and coverage will live on under the ownership of PMG, but it’s sad that the changing business model has made it so difficult for locally-owned news outlets to survive.

But since this change is upon us, I thought this would be a good time to share my appreciation to the Hubbard family for their stewardship of the newspaper for all these many years. Newspapers have been called “the first draft of history,” and the Journal-Patriot certainly fits that description.

Over the years, the Journal-Patriot has kept residents informed, public officials honest and advertisers healthy with customers. It’s been an institution in this community for generations, and our community’s story has been told in its pages.

I sincerely thank all those who have contributed to its publication over the years.

ROBERT JOHNSON,

North Wilkesboro mayor
