I am certainly relieved to know that four of five Wilkes County commissioners have vast experience with the medical profession and, more specifically, new infectious diseases, and propose lifting the statewide COVID-19 restrictions for the county, “because people are hurting.”

If one has only a rudimentary knowledge of the spread of infectious diseases, and this virus in particular, you know that the CDC hasn’t issued their guidelines for eliminating this virus because some politician says “it’s time.”

Since we have had absolutely no assistance from the White House, the epidemiological experts must be those making the closing decisions and advising state governors with their expertise.

If you have a bacterial disease, and are placed on antibiotics for two weeks, you definitely don’t stop taking the medication because “I feel a lot better.” You take the entire prescription until it is exhausted. There will be a slowing of new cases and deaths in a matter of weeks, but that will not be the time to scream “all is well, open the gates.”

There are approximately 100,000 to 200,000 Americans who recently contracted the virus and do not now show symptoms, (CDC statistics). To pretend it’s time to reopen all businesses now is a purely political decision and is delusional, based on absolutely zero medical science.
