This is in response to a recent letter in the Wilkes Journal-Patriot with opinions on the COVID-19 vaccine based on misinformation and untruths. Such opinions amaze me. Instead of following science, they follow conspiracy theories and ignorance.

Wilkes County Commissioner Eddie Settle’s statement about life in North Carolina during the 1918-19 pandemic does not accurately portray the impact of the flu on daily life then. He said, "... people had to keep on living. They moved into World War I and kept on going.”

I would like to thank the Wilkes Board of Education for putting back in place mask requirements. While controversial to some, it is the right choice. My child wearing a mask gives some protection, but an unmasked child with COVID lessens the safety level that would be in place if both were masked.

If all men were really created equal, we'd all be as smart as Thomas Jefferson, but we're not. So, his oft repeated phrase seems to have been just political rhetoric. Talent, ability, intellect are unevenly distributed, and all men are not created equal.

The Wilkes County Board of Education let us down by not making masks mandatory. I know there are many who won't agree with me, but regardless of your politics, masks do work. You don't want to trust Fauci, fine. You don't want to trust Governor Cooper, fine.

There are three great festivals lined up in the coming months: FaithFest on Aug. 28, MerleFest on Sept. 16-19 and the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival on the first Saturday in October. There is a risk of these events being COVID-19 super-spreaders or even being canceled.

One definition of Socialism is redistribution. The Left understands that Capitalism creates income gaps and envy of the wealthy, and they buy votes by pledging redistribution (Democratic-Leftist politicians will promise anything to be reelected, even if we can't afford it.)

I don’t know why the passing of anyone surprises me anymore but it shocked and saddened me to read of Carol Childers’ recent journey beyond our realm. I knew Carol for the good care she gave to my two Russian Blues, Garbo and Spring Breeze, when, as a newcomer to this part of our country, I …

I would like to respond to the letter to the editor titled, “Solutions should be rooted in compassion,” (April 14). The comment that we need to call out white supremacy and dismantle the things that continue them is not a valid point.

I just want to say a big thank you to the volunteers who worked so hard to clean up Boomer Road. As I went to town before lunch, they were hard at work. When I came back, there were many bags filled with trash and the worker were still busy.

While all good folks condemn violence, the recent letter from Kathryn Charles, Wilkes Democratic Party chair, (“All forms of violence are condemned,” March 31 issue) is less than truthful.

A letter to the editor in the April 7 issue (“Now is time to act and pray for nation”) argued that President Biden and his administration caused more strife and division. I disagree. I need only recall my time at App State during the 2016 election to know that strife and division didn’t star…

I traveled back to my hometown to cheer for my nephew on the Wilkes Central High School homecoming court the last weekend in March. We were even more excited to see that he won. This was cause for celebration. We enjoyed the weekend and anxiously awaited the newspaper announcement. Unfortuna…

For all his talk of unifying the country, Joe Biden and his administration have caused more strife and division than ever in our country. The constant cry of white supremacy, racism and the never-ending tirade of blaming the past administration is sure proof that not only do we have a presid…

Hello fellow residents of Wilkes County and beyond. Let’s talk trash, litter and all things messy and ugly. Since I last wrote on this subject, it's my opinion things have just gotten worse, messier and uglier. I will give everyone the fact that these past 12 months have been like no other a…

Wilkes County Democrats, along with fellow N.C. 5th Congressional District Democrats, condemn all forms of violence, discrimination, racism, harassment, and xenophobia. We are saddened by the violence against the Asian American community in Atlanta and around the country. Misinformation abou…

The First Amendment only prohibits Congress – the legislative branch of the United States government – from censoring free speech. The First Amendment does not prohibit companies such as Twitter, Facebook and the Journal-Patriot from restricting speech.

I recently became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination.  I accessed the Wilkes Health Department’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic website and successfully made my appointment. At my appointment, I arrived at the River's Edge vaccination clinic site about 30 minutes early. The four lanes of incomin…

Ever seen the move, “The Majestic,” starring Jim Carey? At the beginning and end of this movie, just enter the word “conservative” instead of Communist and you’ve got the gist of what’s beginning to happen in this country. I’m referring to recent hearings concerning conservative news outlets.

Fact checkers. Do you ever wonder who their checkers are? What is fact one day may not be fact the next after events occur. An example is President Biden’s Jan. 28 order rescinding the “Mexico City Policy,” a federal policy that barred U.S. foreign aid from being used to perform or promote a…

In our Christian nation, we now have a commander-in-chief who is pro-abortion. He says he is of the Catholic faith. Well, the Catholic church opposes all forms of abortion procedures whose direct purpose is to destroy a zygote, blastocyst, embryo, or fetus since it holds that human life must…

The 9/11 attacks were from a foreign, anti-American group that fostered hatred for America, Americans and our way of life. The Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol was birthed by a self-centered, egotistical individual who lives in his own reality show. The president of the United States incited thi…

I would like to pay tribute to Misty Martin, who passed away Nov. 22 at the young age of 35 and was one of my former athletes. As the obituary stated, she was a member of the 4x100 meter relay team at Wilkes Central High School that set a school record in 2003, which still stands. That relay…

People are spending time dressing up their homes for the holidays, but people are also dressing down our roads. As I went down Mertie Road this morning, someone had dumped a sofa and a couple of older TVs on the side of the road — almost in the road. There are a lot of places on this road th…

Per the dropping off of unwanted cats and dogs addressed in a recent letter to the editor, I am in great sympathy. Someone dropped off a kitten at my house in early June. It looked like a baby red fox and was trying to get into my chicken pen. When I live trapped it, I realized it was a kitt…
