There are three great festivals lined up in the coming months: FaithFest on Aug. 28, MerleFest on Sept. 16-19 and the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival on the first Saturday in October. There is a risk of these events being COVID-19 super-spreaders or even being canceled.

Members of the Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club, which sponsors the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in downtown North Wilkesboro, have spent much effort and money on preparations for a festival that brings many benefits to our community.

When we canceled the Apple Festival one year ago because of a COVID-19 surge, our only defense was social distancing and masking. We’re in the midst of another surge, but now we have effective vaccines for COVID-19. Please get vaccinated.

There are practical consequences to all of this – lost revenue for our vendors, local merchants and non-profit groups that provide parking spaces and other services and products. We can return to our pre-COVID lives if we’ll all act wisely to protect ourselves, our families and our communities.
