The Better Business Bureau is warning people to look out for customer survey scams carried out via email or text message.
Scammers posing as well-known retailers are sending fake customer surveys to steal credit card numbers and other sensitive personal identification information leading to identity theft. Sometimes, victims are asked to make payments.
Intended victims receive emails or text message asking them to complete a customer satisfaction survey with the promise of receiving a gift card, choice of products or the opportunity to win something. Always be wary of rewards that are too good to be true.
Customer surveys from legitimate business don’t ask for credit card numbers or banking information. Do a quick search online to see if the survey has a scam alert before completing it.
If you’re a frequent shopper at certain national chain stores, there’s a good chance you’ll receive an email falsely identified as being from the retailer. More often than not, the email will say that you have been selected to complete a survey about your recent customer experience.
It’s easy for scammers to steal the colors, logos and headers of well-known businesses or organizations. Scammers can make their email’s links appear genuine, as if they really lead to official websites with promises of numerous prizes.
Don’t trust unsolicited and out-of-the-blue inquiries, especially those that start with “Dear Customer” Legitimate businesses don’t ask for credit card numbers or other personal information on customer surveys.
Remember that whenever in doubt, the internet is always available for double-checking. You can also call the official customer-service line of the business the communication claims to be from.
More often than not, you only get the chance to win a gift card or receive a small discount from the next purchase if the survey is real. Few businesses can afford to give away at $50 gift cards just for answering a few questions.
When you even partly respond to a survey scam, you can expect to get offers from more.
Lastly, one of the best indicators of a scam is when you’re urged to act quickly and told time is limited. You should act quickly - to end communication with the scammer who contacted you.
