I don’t know why the passing of anyone surprises me anymore but it shocked and saddened me to read of Carol Childers’ recent journey beyond our realm. I knew Carol for the good care she gave to my two Russian Blues, Garbo and Spring Breeze, when, as a newcomer to this part of our country, I had to have surgery in Winston-Salem.

But I most remember her for helping me to adopt Mr. Buttons, an elderly and blind dog that I took home from the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in 2013. Then, I remember her as the woman from the library who ran the book sales at the Stone Center. As someone who came as a stranger to this county, I knew instantly that Carol was one of my godmothers.
