The Rev. Troy “Leon” Church, 85, of Purlear passed away Monday, July 20, 2020, at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Medical Center. Leon was born June 7, 1935, in Wilkes County to Troy A. and Lora Mae Faw Church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, retired from Carolina Mirror as a truck driver and was a member of Second Street Baptist Church. He served as chaplain for Miller Funeral Service for many years.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mildred Brown Church; and a sister, Mattie Blackburn.
Surviving are his wife, Carol South Church; a son, Terry Church and spouse, Carmen; his grandchildren, Phillip Church and Julia Hardy and spouse, Louis, all of North Wilkesboro; his stepdaughters, Sylvia Church and spouse, Steve, and Lisa Staley and spouse, Archie, all of Wilbar; his stepsons, Gary South and spouse, Patty, and Larry South and spouse, Janet, all of Wilbar; his sisters, Janie English of Drexel and Sue Shoemaker of Biloxi, Miss.; a half-sister, Linda Wagoner; a half-brother, Troy Alton Church; two great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2020, at Miller Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Danny Dillard officiating. Burial will follow in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Church’s viewing will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Thursday, prior to the service.
