SYLVIA ROBINSON

Sylvia D. Robinson, 69, of North Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, June 4, 2020, at her home.

Private funeral services will be held, with the Rev. Richard K. Watts and the Rev. Michael Gillespie Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery.  Ms. Robinson’s viewing will be Thursday, June 11, 2020, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.  

A public memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ms. Robinson was born July 29, 1950, in Wilkes County to Paul Lee Robinson Sr. and Gertrude L. Adams Robinson. She was a member of Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Church and was part of the first integrated senior class to graduate from Wilkes Central High School in 1968. She graduated in 1972 from North Carolina Central University with a bachelor’s degree. Sylvia retired from the Wilkes County School System after 32 years of service as a teacher and a coach.

Sylvia was on the board of trustees for Wilkes Community College, Wilkes Literacy Board, Wilkes Health Foundation, Wilkes Health Board, Care Net of Wilkes and Wilkes Community Partnership for Children. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.-Phi Omega Chapter, director of Christian education at Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Church, chairman of Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Scholarship Fund and a member of the usher board and the gospel choir. She received the Great State Hero Award for United Way of Wilkes, was a Women of Wilkes winner and was Wilkes Central’s “Millennium Teacher of the Year.”

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by two brothers, Paul Lee Robinson Jr. and wife, Betty, of North Wilkesboro and John Richard Robinson and wife, Lisa, of High Point; her nieces, Caitlin R. Bailey and husband, Jarrett, Olivia Robinson and Jazzmin Robinson; her nephews, Joshua Robinson and wife, Latoyla, and Christopher Robinson; her great-nephews, Payton Robinson and Baby Bailey; her great-nieces, Allie Robinson, Ryann Robinson and Joanna Bailey; her goddaughter, Adina Watkins; a sorority sister, Andrea Bush; her beloved and faithful dog, Maddy Lee McAdams Robinson; and a host of other relatives, friends and coworkers.
