Sonia D. Hairston Witcher, 64, of Wilkesboro peacefully transitioned into her eternal life, Sept. 27, 2020, at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Brent Bailey, Pastor Jesse Fields and Rev. Wayman Rucker Jr. The family will receive friends from noon to until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Burial will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Witcher was born on May 4, 1956, to the late John E. Hairston Sr. and Elaine Rucker-Hairston of Powhatan, W.Va. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior at Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church in Powhatan W.Va. She was a faithful member of Grace Kingdom Life Ministries, where she sang in the choir and served on the Marcie J. Bailey Scholarship Education Fund Committee. She loved spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her so much joy. There was no better place like Gramma’s, maw-maws or Grammy’s house. It was their home away from home. Sonia enjoyed spending time with her friends, laughing, dancing, singing, praying and making fond memories. Her strength, love, perseverance, faith, kindness, meekness, and compassion, which she obtained from the Holy Spirit that came from within, were attributes she diligently instilled into her family. To know her was to love her. She stood for what was right and would not waiver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayman N. Witcher Sr.; sister, Sheila Hairston; and two brothers, Reginald Hairston and Blaine Hairston Sr.
She is survived by three daughters, Lavonia and Gregory Bailey of Wilkesboro, Latrice and Cameron Gibbs of North Wilkesboro, Shaniece and Tevin Cooke of Wilkesboro; a son, Michael and Tanya Cannaday of Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Tameka Baker and husband, Anthony, of West Virginia; two stepsons, Wayman N. Witcher Jr. of West Virginia and Richard Witcher and wife, Joann, of West Virginia; 12 grandchildren, Derell Cannaday, India Lipford, Keeya Bailey, Lathan Cannaday, Kamre Gibbs, Cameron Gibbs Jr., Jordyn Cooke, Kamorah Gibbs, Madison Cannaday, Ziyah Bailey, Elijah Cooke and Kyrie Cooke; 11 great-grandchildren, Aniyah Cannaday, Brayden Cannaday, Jeremiah Cannaday, Imran Jones, Zechariah Cannaday, Arianna Corpening, Kamiya Anderson, Camellia Cannaday, Carter Corpening and Imori Dobbins; Michael Cannaday Sr. of North Wilkesboro, father of Lavonia, Latrice and Michael Jr; a sister, Audra P.
