Shirley (Speaks) Dowell

Shirley (Speaks) Dowell, 85, wife of James Dowell Jr., of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 5, 2023, at her home. Mrs. Dowell was born March 7, 1938, in Wilkesboro to Eloise (Harris) Speaks and John A. Speaks. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Maurice Broussard, and her great-granddaughter, Brayleigh Broussard.

Surviving are her husband, James Dowell; sister, Betty (Wyman) Johnson; three children, Mario (Wendy) Broussard, Marie Broussard, and Kevin (Flora) Dowell; six grandchildren, Mario II (Natasha) Broussard, Brandon Broussard, Desmand (Brittany) Brown, Brittany Broussard, Arianna Gonzalez, Yulianna Dowell; and four great grandchildren, Symone Sims, Declan Broussard, Sebastian Brown, and Journee Broussard.

Graveside service will be held 12:30 Saturday, May 13, 2023, at the Harris Family Cemetery with Mario Broussard II officiating. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, prior to service. Miller Funeral Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
