SADIE BATTLE

Sadie Juliet Battle, daughter of Jesse Monroe Patterson and Julia Annie Gilreath, was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Kings Creek near Lenoir. She departed this life Sunday, March 1, 2020.

She joined the church at an early age, being the youngest daughter and relative in a family of ministers, especially her father, the Rev. Jesse Patterson. Also, at an early age, she took to music like a fish to water.  She graduated from North Carolina Central University, with a major in music. Thereafter, she moved to Raleigh, where she worked as a music educator in the Wake County Public School system for about 40 years. Her signature card as a music educator was the many elaborate student musical performances, many piano student, and church choirs. She was a member of Top Ladies of Distinction Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

As a member of St. Paul AME Church in Raleigh, she served as minister of music, choir director and organist for over 30 years. Anyone who knew Sadie Battle also knew that she was a person of deep faith.  As she traveled the world, especially to the Middle East, Korea, Africa and Europe, her faith deepened even more. As a sign of demonstrating her faith, she had an active lay ministry in the church and regularly sent financial contributions to support international children’s ministries. She was also very supportive of the ministries of Patterson Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Kings Creek, where she grew up.

Sadie Battle’s memorial service will be conducted on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at 9:30 a.m. at Patterson Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 4170 Grandin Road, Lenoir.

With robust spirit, Sadie Battle was married to the late Dr. Lorenzo Battle III and leaves behind her children, Dr. Constance Battle, M.D., Carmen Battle-Mumford, J.D., and the Very Rev.
